Bilong — The Gargoyle Dragon
Bilong is one of the fiercest dragons in Chinese tradition. He was not invoked for rain or abundant harvests. Instead, he was entrusted with a far greater duty: guarding temples, palaces, and sacred places from evil spirits and any unwelcome visitor.
For centuries, his stone likeness adorned the roofs and cornices of ancient buildings. It was believed that his fearsome appearance could drive away malevolent forces, while his ever-watchful gaze protected everything under his care. This is why the image of the guardian dragon became an integral part of Chinese temple architecture.
— Unlike the majestic celestial dragons, Bilong has a more grounded, beast-like appearance. His broad face, powerful build, and vigilant expression embody the spirit of an ancient guardian who never leaves his post.
— The sculpture is built around a sense of restrained tension. Bilong firmly holds his place, as if he has spent centuries guarding the boundary between the safe world of humanity and whatever lies beyond it.
— Instead of traditional dragon scales, his body is covered with a distinctive texture resembling thick fur. This unusual detail strengthens his connection to the ancient stone guardians that once adorned Chinese temples and imperial palaces.
Bilong does not seek battle — he prevents it from ever reaching those under his protection. His place has always been at the boundary between safety and the unknown, where his presence alone is enough to make evil pass by.
